How is stainless steel strip made?
The production process of stainless steel strips involves several key steps:
Melting and Refining
Initially, iron, chromium, nickel, and other alloying elements are precisely weighed and mixed in a melting furnace to achieve the desired chemical composition. In furnaces like arc furnaces or induction furnaces, additional alloy components are heated to high temperatures, causing them to melt and form a molten steel pool.
Continuous Casting
Once the molten stainless steel is ready, it undergoes continuous casting to create semi-finished products such as slabs or billets. Continuous casting involves pouring the molten steel into water-cooled molds to form solidified slabs. This process helps maintain the steel's temperature and consistency, ensuring improved mechanical properties and reduced segregation.
Hot Rolling
The next crucial step is hot rolling, during which the semi-finished products are shaped into thinner materials. Slabs or billets are heated and passed through a series of rollers to gradually reduce their thickness. In the hot rolling process, stainless steel undergoes tremendous pressure and heat.
Pickling
The final step is pickling, a process for cleaning and removing scale. In this process, the stainless steel strip is immersed in an acidic solution to eliminate any oxides or impurities. It is then rinsed with water and dried with nitrogen gas.
This sequence of steps ensures the production of high-quality stainless steel strips with the desired specifications and properties.
